LANSING, Mich. – Lansing Mayor Andy Schor and the Lansing Economic Development Corporation (Lansing EDC) today announced the relaunch of the Build Lansing initiative with a new online platform designed to connect developers, investors, and community partners with strategically prioritized, publicly owned redevelopment opportunities throughout the city. The Build Lansing page can be found here: https://lansingedc.com/build-lansing.
The refreshed platform launches with two featured redevelopment sites, Kalamazoo Gateway and 308 E. César E. Chávez Avenue, representing the first phase of a growing portfolio of City-owned properties and other strategic sites that have been identified for redevelopment. The page also includes redevelopment information on the Racer Trust Plant 6 property that stands ready for redevelopment as well.
Build Lansing will serve as a centralized resource providing prospective developers with property information, site characteristics, zoning, development context, environmental information, and links to active Requests for Information (RFIs) or Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and available assistance, helping streamline due diligence and accelerate redevelopment opportunities.
“Build Lansing is about creating a win-win and making it easier to invest in our community,” said Mayor Andy Schor. “We have parking lots and empty land that can be developed for things that we need – housing, entertainment, commercial spaces, jobs, and so much more. I believe that there are higher and better uses for these spaces, and I am once again asking the public and development community to provide proposals on how to better use this land. I look forward to seeing the proposals, including financing and drawings, to make these parcels more active and vibrant spaces in Lansing. By providing transparent, accessible information about strategic redevelopment sites, we are reducing barriers for developers and the public while advancing projects that strengthen neighborhoods, create jobs, and expand housing opportunities for Lansing residents.”
The platform reflects the City’s broader redevelopment priorities, including:
- Increasing attainable and workforce housing opportunities.
- Activating commercial corridors and neighborhood business districts.
- Returning underutilized and vacant properties to productive use.
- Encouraging projects that generate long-term economic and community impact.
The inaugural featured properties highlight two unique opportunities for investment:
- Kalamazoo Gateway (near 500 E. Kalamazoo Street) represents a highly visible redevelopment opportunity within the Stadium District. The site offers the potential to create a welcoming entrance into the city while supporting mixed-use development, commercial investment, and neighborhood revitalization that builds on recent housing developments and the Capital City Market. The Stadium District supports numerous surrounding amenities, including the State Capitol, Jackson Field, the Lansing Center, Impression 5 Science Center, and the Lansing River Trail. Information can be found here: https://lansingedc.com/build-lansing/Lot49
- F. Preuss Building (308 E. César E. Chávez Avenue) offers a strategic redevelopment opportunity within Old Town’s Commercial District of a 2,200 square foot two-story structure built in 1875. The first floor includes 1,718 square feet of commercial space and the second floor includes 1,723 square feet of residential space. The redevelopment of this property will support the activation of Old Town’s growth and will build on over 160 units of housing development recently announced for the district. “Build Lansing is more than a property listing website,” said Shelley Davis Boyd, Chair of the Lansing EDC Board of Directors. “It is a proactive economic development tool that helps connect the development community with opportunities that align with Lansing’s vision for growth. By providing clear information upfront, we hope to encourage more developers to explore investment opportunities in our city.”
While the initial launch features two redevelopment opportunities, additional publicly owned properties and strategic sites will be added over time as they become available and are prioritized for redevelopment.
Developers, investors, and community members are encouraged to explore the relaunched Build Lansing platform and contact the Lansing EDC to discuss redevelopment opportunities, learn more about featured properties, and discover resources available to support development in Lansing.
