Lansing Lugnuts Turn 30!

Big Lug

Guest Writer: Jay Krammes

Opening Day will hit a little differently this year (pun intended). When the gates open at Jackson Field on Thursday, April 2, it won’t simply mark the start of another season. The Lansing Lugnuts are celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2026 — three decades after more than 10,000 fans filled Oldsmobile Park on April 11, 1996.

Lansing joined the Midwest League that year as a Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The riverfront ballpark was part of a broader downtown redevelopment effort, and that first sellout quieted doubts about whether it would work. From the beginning, the Lugnuts were as much about Lansing as they were about baseball. Summer nights downtown had a new draw—one that brought people together from across the region.

Over time, affiliations with major league ball clubs shifted, but fan support held. The shift from the Royals to the Chicago Cubs in 1999 led to the franchise’s signature season: the 2003 Midwest League championship. In 2005, a 15-year partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays ushered in the club’s most stable era. During that stretch, future major league standouts—including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Marcus Stroman, Noah Syndergaard, and Bo Bichette—all played in Lansing before breaking through at the highest level. And one of the original 1996 Lugnuts, Carlos Beltrán, began a career that culminates with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame this year—a fitting full-circle moment in a milestone season.

Following Major League Baseball’s 2021 restructuring, Lansing became the High-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, one step closer to the majors. New faces will be seen again this spring. Though it’s a new season, the same question remains: who among them will be the next major league star?

The ballpark has evolved alongside the franchise—Oldsmobile Park, then Cooley Law School Stadium, now Jackson Field. The name has changed. The experience has not: affordable tickets, fan engagement, and fireworks reflecting off the downtown skyline.

This year will be led on the field by manager Javier “Javi” Godard, who returns to direct the club with a focus on player development within the Athletics’ system. Godard previously served as the Lugnuts’ hitting coach in 2021 and 2022 and will be the franchise’s 20th all-time manager. His presence brings a sense of continuity to a season built around both celebration and opportunity.

As excitement for the thirtieth Opening Day builds and ushers in spring, attending a Lugnuts game this season is sure to bring lasting memories. Come out, catch a game, take pictures, and celebrate with the team and the community in this historical year.
