January Business of the Month: Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA)

CATA

Guest Writer: Jay Krammes

CATA has been part of Lansing’s daily rhythm for decades, showing up in the ways most people don’t stop to notice but rely on all the same. It’s the buses rolling through downtown before sunrise, the drivers who know many of their riders by name, and the routes that quietly knit together neighborhoods, campuses, and business districts. At a time when cities everywhere are rethinking how people utilize transit, CATA hasn’t waited for permission to evolve.  They’ve been holding bus listening sessions to improve route services, finalizing labor agreements, implementing new fare payment options through mobile pay, updating their fleet with full-size electric buses, expanding mobility services, and modernizing operations to meet how Lansing lives and works today.

From connecting students to jobs and internships to making it easier for residents to reach healthcare, groceries, or a night out on Washington Square, CATA functions as the connective tissue that helps the region breathe and keep pace with its own momentum.

CATA doesn’t just move people from point A to point B; it moves a community forward. It’s part of who they are and where they’re going, to keep our community connected.
