The Lansing area’s Hispanic and Latino community has a long and important history of contributing to the region’s culture, neighborhoods, businesses and civic life. Hispanic Heritage Month offers an opportunity not only to celebrate that heritage, but also to learn more about the people and families who have helped shape Lansing and Mid-Michigan.
The City of Lansing celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with events September 15–October 15. The celebration kicks off Tuesday, September 15, at 11 a.m. at Lansing City Hall. Ourspace’s 517 Hispanic Heritage Weekend will take place September 17–20 and will feature a variety of educational and entertaining events highlighting Hispanic culture and the local community.
Thursday, September 17, begins with a Business Seminar and Mixer at Lansing City Hall from 5:30–8 p.m., offering an opportunity to connect with Hispanic and Latino entrepreneurs, business leaders and community members. On Friday, September 18, the Lansing Shuffle Patio will host a Hispanic Heritage Dance Class and Mixer from 6–10 p.m.
The Taste of Hispanic Heritage Festival will take place Saturday, September 19, on Capitol Avenue in front of the Michigan State Capitol. The festival will celebrate the traditions, food, music and culture of the Hispanic community with live performances, dancing, lucha libre wrestling, a Kidz Zone, food vendors, retail vendors and community organizations.
The weekend concludes Sunday, September 20, with a Latin Jazz Night featuring Orquesta Ritmo at the Lansing Shuffle Patio from 6–8 p.m.
Together, these events celebrate the many cultures and traditions that make up Lansing’s Hispanic and Latino community while recognizing its ongoing role in shaping the city and the greater Lansing area.
