This series explores the balance between the journey and the destination when it comes to the artistic process. When creating the pieces that make up “Curiosities,” Sally Rose’s art practice was driven by questions and endless what-ifs. By experimenting with a variety of materials and sculptural forms, every end product of her handmade paper is unique. No two pieces are alike, each sparking their own questions and curiosities. Together, Sally’s works bring to light her stunning attention to detail and craft, and inspire viewers to question the symbiotic relationship between process and product.
Sally’s art practice is fueled by process-oriented experiments. Making paper by hand allows for her to work directly with plants and to satisfy a penchant for observing and collecting natural objects. Specific plants are cooked, beaten to a pulp, manipulated, and dried, which transforms them into paper — both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. Colors, textures, and biomorphic forms turn the experimental artifacts into figures to question. You can see more of Sally’s work on her Instagram: @sallyrose.fibers.
“Curiosities” will be on display at Nelson Gallery through June 30, 2023, and we hope you’ll join us at the Opening Reception on May 11.
