Building Design Services

Enhance your curb appeal and preserve your historic building for modern uses with support from DLI’s Design & Public Spaces team.

At Downtown Lansing Inc., we are committed to preserving the historic beauty of our neighborhood. That’s why our staff and Design & Public Spaces Committee will review your proposed property improvements and coordinate with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Michigan Main Street (MMS) to offer property and business owners any possible support through tax credit evaluations and any other financial assistance that may be able to support your property.

In order to be eligible, you must be prepared to accept feedback and all recommendations follow the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation as developed by the National Park Service. These recommendations could help qualify your space for financial incentives to complete improvements.

Together, we can preserve the unique history of our community while setting up our businesses for success.

How Do I Know If I’m Eligible?

In order to receive design assistance, your building must be located within the local Main Street area of District A of the PSD and zoned for commercial or mixed-use. Your building does not need to be considered “historic” in order to be eligible. Individual owner-occupied rental residences are not eligible to receive design assistance.

Reach out to Audrey Brayton, Office Manager of Downtown Lansing Inc. at [email protected] with information about your proposed improvements to your historic building. Your communication will then be shared with DLI’s Design & Public Spaces Committee for further discussion.
